The Art & Science Of Asset Valuations

What Exactly Is An Asset Valuation?
An asset valuation is a well supported and defensible independent opinion as to the relevant value of the subject asset.

Why Well Supported & Defensible?
Valuations are consistently used as a basis for securing credit, financing, tax assessments, partner dissolution, divorce settlements, and insurance for many companies. That means that your asset valuation needs to stand up to the scrutiny of your banker, your CPA, your attorney, the IRS, examiners or prospective buyers and sellers. Bottom-line, they want facts, figures and methodology that will stand up in court.

Why Is It An Opinion?
Because what you purchased that asset for yesterday may not be what it's actually worth today. A classic case is a new car that immediately depreciates in value once you drive it off the dealer's lot. So what's today's value for that car? Is depreciation at work with your machinery? Is wear and tear now a factor? Is the equipment obsolete? Based on the documentation provided, the condition of the machinery, market research, timing and economic strategies, our expert then formulates an opinion on the value of the asset in question.

And The Concern Is?
The opinion has more or less credit depending upon the skill, knowledge, and experience of the expert.

The Bottom Line...
Estimating the true value requires specialized skills from someone who has the training & expertise to determine accurate and defensible numbers - and one who has the ability and willingness to defend his or her opinion - in court, to the IRS or to the buyer's representatives.
